The National Science Foundation (NSF), functioning under the Ministry of Education, organizes "Kid Naturalist" programme annually for students in grades 1-6.  The aim of this programme is to train children to investigate the environment they live in with scientific perspective and appreciation.

General background of the programme

  1. The programme is for students of grades 1-6
  2. The applications to register to the programme should be forwarded by respective class teachers through school principal.
  3. The students who registered to participate the programme has to observe nature (fauna/flora /natural phenomena) within the duration of six weeks and prepare a nature journal based on the observations made.
  4. Teachers are expected to give necessary guidance for students to undertake their projects while parents can extend their support for observations.
  5. The total project duration is eight weeks. Children should do their observation every day, at scheduled times, for a minimum period of six weeks. The last 2 weeks of the project period can be utilized to prepare the nature journal.
  6. One student can submit only one “nature journal”.
  7. The number of pages of the journal should be between 10-20 pages. The sample format given by the NSF can be used to prepare it without hampering the student’s creativity. Please note that it is not mandatory to use the given format.
  8. The project must be an activity of the child concerned only and the NSF has full authority to reject the application if undue influence and contribution of adults is detected during evaluation.
  9. The class teacher and the school principal should endorse that the nature journal submitted to the NSF is student’s work using the given format at the end of the nature journal.
  10. The applications can be submitted using any of the options given below on/before 30th June 2023.

Option III

Post the application to Head, Science Communication and Outreach Division, National Science Foundation, 47/5, Maitland Place, Colombo 07 by indicating "Kid Naturalist 2023" in the top left hand corner of the envelope.
