The NSF expands its School Science Society network jointly with the Ministry of Science and Technology

The Ministry of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Sri Lanka Inventors Commission (SLIC), is set to launch a national programme to expand the School Science Society Network (SSN) and Young Inventors Clubs (YIC) across the country.

The inaugural programme of this was implemented in three districts of the Northern Province—Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, and Mannar with the ceremonial launching of the programme on 23rd January 2026 at the District Secretariat, Vavuniya.

The event started by giving Welcome address by the Chairman of the NSF Dr Sudath Samaraweera and Introductory speech by Director of the SLIC Mr. Nalin Dolawatta. The Role of NSF in promoting Science Education in the country and benefits of joining NSF School Science Societies Network (SSSN) was presented by Dr Dilrukshi Ranthunge, Head of the Science Communication and Outreach Division of the NSF while her speech was translated into Tamil by the Mr Ahamad Akram Scientific Officer of the NSF. The objectives and procedure of the establishment of Youth Inventor Clubs (YIC) were explained by the Staff Officers of the SLIC. The program was held under the patronage of the Hon. Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Chrishantha Abeysena, as the Chief Guest, with Ms. K. G. R. Kuruppuarachchi Additional Secretary/Research to the Ministry of Science & Technology, serving as the Guest of Honour.

During the event, Science Society registration letters were formally handed over to 32 schools, while 25 schools received conditional approval letters and YIC name boards, representing all six education zones in the region. This initiative marked a significant step toward strengthening a culture of scientific inquiry, research, and innovation among the school community in the 03 Districts namely Vavuniya, Mutative and Mannar of the Northern Province. A total of 230 participants, including Principals, Teachers, and Students, attended the event. In coincide with the event all the other schools in the region have been establishing their School Science Society and receiving NSF School Science Society registration.

This national level initiative underscores the Ministry’s commitment to creating an inclusive, innovation driven, and scientifically empowered future generation for Sri Lanka.
