National Thematic Research Programme on Climate Change & Natural Disasters

The National Science Foundation (NSF) hosted another insightful event today, titled “Research into Practice: Evidence-Based Decision-Making Programme” at the NSF auditorium, bringing together leading researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical implementation.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr Sepalika Sudasinghe, Director General of NSF, followed by Opening Remarks from Prof. Saman Seneweera, Chairman of NSF, who emphasized the importance of integrating scientific evidence into national policy frameworks.

Two distinguished presentations highlighted the session:

Prof. G. L. L. Pradeepa Silva from the University of Peradeniya presented a compelling study titled “Comparative Analysis of Climate-Resilient Biodiversity of Home garden Ecosystems in Different Agro-Ecological Regions of Sri Lanka.” Her research underscored the ecological and socio-economic value of home gardens in adapting to climate variability.

Prof. Indrika Rajapakshe of the University of Moratuwa shared findings from her experimental investigation on “Heat Stress, Quality of Life, and Well-Being of Elderly People Living in Tropics.” Her study focused on ageing-in-place within low-income settlements in the Colombo Metropolitan Region, offering insights into urban planning and elder care.

An open discussion with stakeholders followed, fostering dialogue on how research outcomes can inform policy and community-level interventions. The event concluded with remarks by Eng. Mahesh Dissanayake, Head of Research Division, NSF, reiterated the NSF’s commitment to promoting evidence-based approaches for national development.

This programme marks a significant step in aligning scientific inquiry with societal needs, reinforcing NSF’s role as a catalyst for informed decision-making in Sri Lanka
